The Historical Foundation
Our story begins not in a boardroom, but in the memory of a community's struggle for survival. During the devastating famine of 1899-1900, known as the Chhapaniyo Dukal, our ancestors were pushed to the brink. In their darkest hour, honey became their sole sustenance—a lifeline gifted by the native bees of our forests. This profound debt to the bees is etched into our identity, a timeless reminder of the deep, symbiotic bond we share with nature.
The Ancestral Wisdom
For centuries, our community has revered honey not just as food, but as medicine. We learned to distinguish the unique properties of each native bee species, from the potent, healing Koti honey to the soothing Desi Madh. Our ancestors were India's first ecologists, planting flowering trees to attract pollinators, understanding that the bees' prosperity was inextricably linked to their own.
The Modern Challenge & Our Response
In recent times, this delicate balance was threatened. The shift to commercial agriculture and deforestation began to silence the buzz of our native bees. Recognizing this crisis, Under the Mango Tree Society (UTMT Society) ( https://www.utmtsociety.org/ )began its work in 2009 to revive these sustainable practices, teaching a new generation the art of beekeeping with native bees that protects rather than plunders.

Our Birth
The Vandevi FPO
In 2021, this initiative culminated in a landmark achievement. With the support of NABARD (https://www.nabard.org) and UTMT Society ( https://www.utmtsociety.org ) , the farmers and beekeepers formed their own company: Vandevi Honey and Agriculture Producer Company Limited. This was the final step in our journey towards self-reliance—an organization truly owned and controlled by the people of this land.
